As I said before in the Face Tutorial, the face is the most important part of a character because it includes
the eyes and the mouth. Now comes the very most important part in the face; the eyes. A part of this was also discussed in
the Introduction section. But in this tutorial, we'll learn more about how to draw eyes, including the eyes of some famous anime
characters like Hitomi Kanzaki from the Vision of Escaflowne (gotta love this series XD), and you'll also see various
examples of different eyes. Hope you like this tutorial!

As in faces, there is no specific way that teaches you how to draw anime eyes; everything comes from experience, and
from watching A LOT of anime. But if you want to draw a certain style of eyes for a character that you like, then there might be
a way for this. For example, let's try to draw the eyes for this character you see in the left. It might be easier to follow
the steps stated below...
|
-
Start off by drawing the face. You can also draw the hair and whatever you need to draw first; it really depends on you.
We'll start to draw the right eye first, so draw a perfect arc, as shown in '1', and make the end closer to the outline of
the face longer than the inner end.
-
Now, draw another arc above the previous one that touches it from the inner end, and then starts detaching from it. You
can make it exceed the face's outline. This would be for the eyelashes.
-
Color her lashes (or fill the space =/) and lets draw the lower lid. This can be tricky; if you didn't place the lower
lid (eyelashes) in it's proper place, then you might end up with a twisted eye 0_o. If you think you can't do it without guidelines, then
draw a vertical line from the end of the inner upper lid to somewhere down the face, as shown in '3'. Draw the lower eyelashes shorter
than the upper one.
-
You can now draw the iris, and in this case, it's going to be an oval. Draw the upper lid as well.
-
Add glimmers and glitters, cuz an eye isn't an eye without those light-source-reflections, especially in anime >_<.
You have to put in your mind the direction of your light source first, because you're going to draw all the shadows and
highlights according to this source - in every image you draw, that is. Draw another smaller dark oval for the pupil, and
then add the shadows in the iris. Everything should be drawn below/under/beneath the glimmers. Draw the eyebrow, and you're
done with the first eye!
On to the left eye...
-
Now to draw the right eye, you only have to follow similar steps as of those for the first eye you've done. Draw an arc, but
this time, it's not really 'perfect'. The outer end should be way longer than the inner one, and a bit edged outwards, as
shown in the pic.
-
Fill the eyelashes. Now to draw the lower lid/eyelashes, it's not going to be right under the edge of the upper eyelashes.
You have to see where the upper eyelashes end, and then draw the lower ones after some space, exactly as shown in '7'. You
can now draw the oval iris, the lids, and the eyebrow. Remember, unless the character is surprised or scared, her irises are
partly covered by her lids. Complete the whole face if you want to, and you're done =D !

There is one fact about the eyes that you're going to find in almost all anime drawing tutorials: In a front view, the
distance between the two eyes is one eye 0_o ...
Personally, I don't do any Maths while drawing, but I think that it's a good thing to get the right proportions, and for the
character to look good.
(just don't mind the two eyes in this sketch...I just copied one of them and pasted it XD)
And now that you've drawn sample eyes, let's see how to draw the eyes of 3 anime characters (yes, they're all girls
XD):
- Aya Mikage from Ayashi no Ceres.
- Hitomi Kanzaki from Vision of Escaflowne.
- Madoka Ayukawa from KOR.
